How to Get WIFI

You can spend hours researching pocket-WIFIs and SIM card options, so let’s keep it simple:

  • If your accommodations in Japan includes WIFI, you should probably bring a second phone with you, and put a SIM card in it. NOTE: Make sure your phone is “unlocked,” so it can accept a Japanese SIM card.

  • If you want to rent your own apartment, you will need a pocket WIFI. In this scenario your laptop and your original phone will use the pocket-WIFI. NOTE: If you keep your current phone (in Japan) you might want to get a cheap international texting plan. Look into Google Fi, so you can still text people in America, and keep your American phone #.

Mobal is my recommended pocket-WIFI. Basically unlimited data for $50/month. You buy the device for $70, and have it shipped to your school in Japan. Shipping takes about 1 week, and activation happens a few days later. The website looks sketchy, but it’s 100% a real company.
